Tears Of Palestine is a blunt and direct commentary on the tragic fate of innocent, everyday people caught in the crossfire of war and international geo-politics.
The song, though set against the backdrop of Israeli/Palestinian conflict, could just as easily be applied to the citizens of Ukraine or Yemen or any other war-torn region.
I have recently revisited the song, which was originally released in May 2021, as a solo track.
For this updated version, I have once again collaborated with Boston-based flautist Anna Fisher-Roberts. Anna provides an ethereal, middle-eastern inspired flute motif, which underlies the melody of the track, culminating in a haunting fade out, which bookends the songs male voice, choral opening.
The choral accompaniment lends the track a cinematic sweep, fitting of the songs tragic, globally significant subject matter.
lyrics
The women and children of Rafa
Are crying but no one can hear
No one feels their sorrow and suffering
Or the salt of their hard-gotten tears
The hopeless young men of Gaza
For whom peace is a forgotten dream
The unwanted detritus of warfare
Swept away by a monstrous regime
On a hillside above East Jerusalem
On a terrace in mid-morning sun
There's a ringside seat with shakshouka
Which is guarded by young men with guns
As the bulldozers move on the village
And raze Arab homes to the ground
Despite all the wailing and crying
It's a picture without any sound
The sacred waters of Jordan
Where Jesus was baptised by John
Run red with the blood of the fallen
And the slaughter it goes on and on
The dispossessed children of Nakba
Cry for the loss of their land
While the world watches on with indifference
And their tears disappear in the sand
In Washington dark puppet masters
Speak from both sides of their tongues
While they feed the Zionist monster
With rockets and bullets and bombs
In a glass tower on the East River
Our leaders talk a good game
But when all of the talking is over
All that's left is our anger and shame

This is a great collection of songs. Matt McGinn has worked with some wonderful musicians to create an album that is lyrically stunning and hard hitting while being very easy on the ear. Andrew Lawlor
